"Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth." Luke 1:11-15

I can picture Zechariah, in the temple of the Lord, burning the incense, praying to God. Then he saw the angel Gabriel, and got that feeling. That feeling you get when you wake up in the night and hear a noise, and think there's an intruder in the house, that feeling when you are in a high rise building and you look down and you feel like you're sick in the guts. He saw something supernatural, and he was startled and gripped with fear.

This is why they put a leg rope around the priests ankle when he went into the temple, so that if he died in the presence of God, they could drag him out.

I love it how most times when angels appeared to someone in scripture, they said, "Do not be afraid!" They must be pretty awesome beings to warrant such a response. Recently my and I saw Evan Almighty, there is a great scene where God appears to a senator in his first senate sitting, when they are saying the Pledge of allegiance. It's so funny because he faints straight after the bit where he says, "One nation under God" and God is next to Him saying, "One nation under me", then he turns and sees God and faints.

I also love the bit in this passage where it says that John will be great in the sight of the Lord. That's my desire, not to be great in the sight of man, but to bring pleasure to my father. For him to be proud of me. To obey him in what he's asked me to do.

Lord, I want to be filled with your Spirit, like John. Would you hear my prayers, like you heard Zechariah's. May this day be a joy and a delight to you! Amen
