Pure Power

"Any person with a serious skin disease must...cry out, 'Unclean! Unclean!' As long as anyone has the sores, that one continues to be ritually unclean. That person must live alone; he or she must live outside the camp." Leviticus 13:45-46

"Anyone who touches these things becomes unclean and must wash his clothes and bathe in water; he remains unclean until evening." Leviticus 15:27

Have you ever met someone who was really filthy - who obviously hadn't had a shower in ages, whose appearance and body odour was repulsive to you? And then they come to shake your hand or, even worse, give you a hug!? I must confess that I try not to get too close to such people. Or, if someone has a contagious flu or disease, we tend to avoid them like the plague, don't we? We just don't want their disease or 'uncleanness' to rub off on us.

These somewhat strange chapters in Leviticus deal with such problems, outlining 'quarantine' and cleansing rules for uncleanness due to skin diseases and other physical problems. People were not to touch other 'unclean' people or objects lest they became unclean themselves.
What a remarkable thing, then, when we look at the life of Jesus and discover that Jesus was not at all afraid to touch or be with 'unclean', sinful people. In fact this was one of the problems that the religious people of his day (the Pharisees) had with Jesus - while they ran away and hid from an 'unclean' world, Jesus embraced it with his love and purity.

We see this numerous times in the life of Jesus, with him touching the lepers, the woman with the discharge of blood, the woman caught in adultery. Jesus wasn't afraid of being made 'unclean' by such encounters with sinful people. Instead, he imparted his cleanness and purity to them. He brought healing and purity to their uncleanness.

God calls us, as His followers, to do the same - not to be corrupted by the world, but instead to be a purifying and sanctifying influence on those around us; to impart His life, wholeness and purity to those we come in contact with every day. Now that's 'pure' power!

Lord, please use me to touch others with your love and power - to bring your healing and wholeness to a broken and unclean world. May my life radiate your purity and transform the lives of those around me, I pray.
